The International Skating Union (ISU) Grand Prix of Figure Skating Final is set to begin tomorrow in Turin with world champions and Olympic medallists eyeing the top prize after a two-year COVID-19 hiatus.

Scheduled to conclude on December 11, the women’s event is set to be the most competitive with the likes of Mai Mihara and Kaori Sakamoto of Japan up against Belgian Loena Hendrickx and Yelim Kim of South Korea in the line-up.

There will be a lot of buzz behind Mihara - with a season-best of 217.43 points - and Hendrickx’s battle after the former defeated the Belgian to win in Espoo in the last week of November.

World champion Sakamoto will also be hoping to end the year on a high while junior world champion Isabeau Levito of the United States and Skate Canada winner Rinka Watanabe of Japan will be the surprise elements.

Among men, Ilia Malinin of the United States has had a stellar year, becoming the first and only skater to have landed the quad axel in competition.

With a season’s best of 280.37, the battle against World Champion Shoma Uno of Japan with 279.76 points is expected to go down to the wire.

Kao Miura of Japan and compatriot Sota Yamamoto will also be fierce challengers for the title with Italian Daniel Grassl hoping for home success.

In the pairs event, Alexa Knierim and Brandon Frazier of the United States will be the centre of attention.

They will be up against world silver medallists Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara of Japan.

The Canadian duo of Deanna Stellato and Maxime Deschamps and Americans Riku Miura and Ryuichi Kihara are also expected to challenge for the title.
