Team Kevin Koe of Calgary clinched a play-off spot at the Boost National - the second major of the 2019-2020 Pinty's Grand Slam of Curling (GSOC) - with a 6-3 win over local favourites Team Brad Gushue, during the round-robin finale at the CBS Arena in Conception Bay South.

The reigning Pinty's Cup champion Koe wrapped up Pool C with a 3-1 record to bypass the tiebreakers and head straight to the quarter-finals.

Gushue, the 11-time Pinty's GSOC title winner, had already punched his playoff ticket after winning his first three games of the event.

Even with relatively little on the line for the crew from nearby St John's other than seeding, their fans packed the stands from end to end and roared as they scored a deuce in the fourth to grab a 3-2 lead heading into the break.

Koe blanked back-to-back ends and his patience paid off in the game-changing seventh end.

Gushue fell into a bit off trouble and came up short on his last, allowing Koe to capitalise and score four points to silence the crowd.

"It feels good because we knew we were in a tiebreaker if we lost," Koe said.

"We weren’t going to be one of the fortunate teams to sneak through.

"[It] always feels good to beat Brad.

"Over the past couple of years he's had our number at times.

"We're in the quarters.

"We're where we want to be."

Team Brad Jacobs of Sault Ste. Marie also qualified with a 4-3 victory over Team Yuta Matsumura of Japan, and Team Niklas Edin of Sweden scored a 6-1 victory over Team Brendan Bottcher of Edmonton to nail down top seed of the playoffs.

Jacobs, Edin and Bottcher all finished Pool B at 3-1.

Edin awaits the tiebreaker winner between Team Mike McEwen of Winnipeg and defending champions Team Ross Paterson of Scotland, the third-place finishers in Pools A and C, respectively, at 2-2.

The other three quarter-final games are Jacobs versus Bottcher, Gushue versus Team Peter de Cruz of Switzerland and Koe versus Team Bruce Mouat of Scotland.

In the women's tiebreakers, Team Satsuki Fujisawa of Japan stole a point in the eighth end to defeat Team Kerri Einarson of Winnipeg 3-2, and Team Robyn Silvernagle of North Battleford downed reigning world champions Team Silvana Tirinzoni of Switzerland 9-3 to advance.

Team Fujisawa qualified despite only playing as a trio this week, as lead Yurika Yoshida did not join them on the trip due to illness.

In the quarter-finals, they will take on number one seed Team Elena Stern of Switzerland, while Team Silvernagle faces number two seed Team Tracy Fleury of East St. Paul.

Fleury and Stern finished at the top of the leaderboard with unblemished 4-0 records in Pools B and C, respectively.

The other two women’s quarter-finals are Team Jennifer Jones of Winnipeg versus Team Eve Muirhead of Scotland, and Team Chelsea Carey of Calgary versus Team Anna Hasselborg of Sweden.

The quarter-finals take place tomorrow afternoon.

The semi-finals are scheduled for tomorrow evening, with both finals set for Sunday (December 15).

The Boost National features 15 of the top men's and women's teams from around the world.
