Olympic champions Croatia defeated Russia 14-10 in Ruza to keep the pressure on Group C frontrunners Italy, who thrashed Turkey 22-7 on their travels.
The sixth and last round of the men's European preliminaries are due to take place on May 10.
In the women's league, the sixth round of European matches is scheduled for May 3.
The Men's Intercontinental Tournament is set to be held in Japanese city Yokohama from May 10 to 15, followed by the Super Final in June in Huizhou, China.
