The International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup in Ofterschwang, due to take place on January 16 and 17, has been cancelled due to warm weather and a lack of snow in the German resort.

The FIS confirmed in a statement that they were seeking a replacement venue for the event, which was scheduled to include women’s giant slalom and slalom races.

“Due to warm temperatures, lack of snow and unfavourable weather forecasts the ladies' World Cup races in Ofterschwang scheduled for January 16th and 17th 2016 have been cancelled,” it read.

“A possible replacement will be communicated in due course.”

The unseasonable conditions across Europe have wreaked havoc on the FIS World Cup calendar in early 2016, forcing the cancellation, postponement and rearrangement of several events, including the Alpine Skiing World Cup planned for Croatia's capital Zagreb on January 3 and 6, with those races re-arranged for Santa Caterina in Italy.

World skiing’s governing body announced on Monday (January 4) that the Ski Cross World Cup in La Plagne, France, on January 15 and 16 had been switched to Watles, with the competition now taking place on January 16 and 17.

Two competitions will now be held during the event after a Ski Cross World Cup in Watles, due to take place from January 9 to 10, was also cancelled because of persistent high temperatures and a complete lack of a snow base.

It was scheduled to be the opening competition in the discipline to be held in 2016.

The rearranging of the Ski Cross World Cup came following a rare boost for the FIS after two of its events passed the snow control phase, meaning they will take place as planned.

The Alpine Snowboard World Cup in Bad Gastein, scheduled for January 8 and 9, was given a positive test by officials from skiing’s world governing body after artificial snow was used to create a suitable snow layer for the competition, which features parallel slalom races.

Other competitions to fall victim to the warm weather conditions include the Freestyle Skiing World Cup moguls and aerials competitions in Lake Placid, due to be staged from January 14 to 16 in the American two-time Winter Olympic host resort.

The Nordic Combined World Cup in Schonach, Germany from January 9 to 10 has also been cancelled.
