Next month’s International Ski Federation (FIS) Nordic Combined World Cup in the German town of Klingenthal has been cancelled due to a lack of snow.

The uncharacteristically warm weather which has gripped much of central Europe gave the organisers no chance to produce the necessary amount of snow to prepare the jumping hill and the cross-country track.

All the snow has melted on the Vogtlandarena jumping hill, which hosted the FIS Ski Jumping World Cup opener in November.

Snow controller Rudi Tusch therefore took the decision to call off the event, scheduled for January 2 and 3.

"It's with a heavy heart that we have to cancel these competitions," said Organising Committee President, Alexander Ziron.

"Those who know us as organisers know that we would do everything to offer the Nordic Combined athletes the best conditions and the spectators amazing competitions.

"But the weather, which is absolutely not White Christmas, does not allow it."

Temperatures of up to 15 degrees Celsius have not only melted the snow on the Vogtlandarena jumping hill, but also soaked the areas in which the tracks were supposed to be built.

Although light snowfalls are forecast for the turn of the year, it would not give the Organising Committee sufficient time to prepare the hill and track.

The German Ski Federation, along with the host broadcaster ZDF and FIS race director Lasse Ottesen, is in talks to see if and how the cancelled two competitions can be replaced.

With the Klingenthal meet removed off the calendar, the next FIS Nordic Combined World Cup is due to take place in the German town of Schonach im Schwarzwald on January 9 and 10.
