Berenice Owen-Jones, the Australian High Commissioner to Ghana, believes the Games offers the "perfect opportunity" to raise awareness of cricket within the West African nation, as reported by Ghana Web.

Cricket is poised to make its first appearance at the African Games in 2023 with eight-team competitions for both men and women.

Ghana missed out on an appearance at the Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia after finishing second in Group A of the African qualifier to Uganda who went on to advance to the main event after winning the regional final.

However, Owen-Jones remains optimistic about cricket’s future in Ghana and vowed to continue working with the Ghana Cricket Association and the country’s Ministry of Youth and Sports to grow the sport.

"The fact is I can really imagine cricket as a sport for the youth [and] vibrant community of young cricket players here," said Owen-Jones.

"It’s just a matter of encouraging it in the right way.

"The fact that the African Games are going to include cricket for the first time is a perfect opportunity to raise awareness about cricket.

"Another interesting development is that Ghana got selected amongst the 14 emerging cricket nations to host the T20 World Cup, and we had people approaching it with great reverence.

"So this illustrated that the International Cricket Council sees Ghana as having the potential as a cricket-playing nation.

"We would like to do our part in developing cricket in the country so we are working with the Ghana Cricket Association and the Ministry of Youth and Sports in encouraging the awareness of the sport in the country."
