Pan American Games gold medallist Ygor Coelho of Brazil is out of the Pan American Individual Badminton Championships after he suffered a shock quarter-final defeat to Canada's BR Sankeerth in Guatemala City.

Sankeerth recorded a surprise 21-12, 21-12 victory over the third seed to progress to the semi-finals, where he will face second seed and compatriot Brian Yang.

Yang reached the last four after he thrashed El Salvador's Manuel Mejia 21-5, 2-16.

Top seed Jason Anthony Ho-Shue of Canada is also through after his opponent Lino Munoz of Mexico, the fifth seed, retired hurt during their quarter-final contest.

Ho-Shue will take on fourth seed and home hope Kevin Cordon, who beat Timothy Lam of the United States 21-15, 21-8.

Top women's singles seed Beiwen Zhang booked her place in the semi-finals thanks to a 21-8, 21-10 victory over Mexico's Vanessa Karmine Villalobos Vazquez.

Zhang's opponent for a spot in the final will be Canada's Talia Ng, who overcame Peru's Fernanda Saponara Rivva 21-13, 21-13.

American Iris Wang, the second seed, is on course to meet her team mate in the showpiece match after she beat Nairoby Abigail Jimenez 21-10, 21-12.

Rachel Chan of Canada, a 21-13, 21-19 winner over Mexico's Sabrina Solis, awaits for Wang in the semi-finals.

The tournament, which forms part of the qualification process for this year's postponed Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, continues tomorrow.
