The Vanuatu Women in Sport Commission (VanWIS), which operates under the umbrella of the Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC), will hold women's sport leadership workshops this week.

Part of what is billed as "Week of the Girl", the workshop marks International Women's Day, which was on Sunday (March 8).

Women from different sports federations will be encouraged to share ideas, experiences and their values at the three-day event, which will run from tomorrow to March 12.

It is hoped that participants will be able to create personal leadership development plans, with mentors on hand to offer advice and build relationships that can last beyond the course.

It also promises to be a useful networking exercise.

"Developing these leadership qualities in a safe, inclusive and encouraging environment focussed on female empowerment will equip the participants to become tomorrow's leaders in sport in Vanuatu", VanWIS said. 

"It will also develop a cohort of women who will have laid the groundwork to support each other to seek equity in all areas of sport for women in Vanuatu."

For the first time in its Olympic history, Vanuatu did not send any female athletes to the Summer Games in 2016. 

However, the two bronze medals Vanuatu won at the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games came thanks to female athletes, in beach volleyball and F46 javelin.
