FLIR Systems have been named as the official video security provider for the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The company are set to support the security effort at the Games by providing surveillance equipment, including security cameras and video management software.

Their technology will be used to support national and local law enforcement throughout the duration of the Games next month.

It was confirmed last month that Australian Federal Police and Australian Border Force will also assist the Queensland Police Service.

The Australian Defence Force, who are responsible for Australia's army, navy and air force, will deploy 1,000 personnel to help with the effort.

A total of 3,500 police officers from Queensland and 4,200 security personnel will be present at the Games.

A security force of more than 10,000 will work together to ensure the safety of athletes, officials and spectators.

Gold Coast 2018 chairman Peter Beattie stated that public safety was the number one priority during the Games, as he welcomed FLIR to their sponsorship group.

"The Games are a major sporting event - not a security event - and importantly for fans, we are using a number of products, like those being delivered by FLIR, to provide a safe and secure environment while still allowing for efficient access to venues for spectators, athletes and officials in an unobtrusive manner," Beattie said.

"We have acquired the largest number of sponsors for any Commonwealth Games and I'm pleased to welcome FLIR to the Gold Coast 2018 sponsor family."

In preparation for the Games, FLIR has delivered a suite of visible and thermal security cameras, including fixed and pan-tilt-zoom cameras.

In many cases, the cameras will be equipped with embedded video analytics, which will help to detect threats and stream live information to allow rapid response to security incidents at Games venues.

The company are also set to provide a mix of thermal imaging cameras that operate day and night, through light fog or smoke, ensuring continual observation and accurate detection capabilities.

"FLIR products will provide wide area, 24/7 surveillance to ensure the protection of the Gold Coast community, guests and athletes," said Travis Merrill, President of the FLIR commercial business unit.

"Our end-to-end suite of security solutions supports the comprehensive plan for a safe and successful Commonwealth Games.

"We look forward to playing a role in this celebration of humanity, equality and destiny."

The Commonwealth Games are scheduled to run from April 4 to 15.
