Triple Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei continued his push for a 12th Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Super Series with a comfortable win in front of a home crowd.

Lee took just 27 minutes during his second round match to brush aside Hong Kong’s Hu Yun at the Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching as he won 21-8, 21-6.

His opponent in tomorrow’s quarter-finals will be South Korea’s Jeon Hyeok Jin after he defeated Brice Leverdez of France 21-13, 21-10.

The biggest surprise of the day in the men’s singles came in the form of fourth seeded and Rio 2016 bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen being beaten 9-21, 21-14, 21-19 by India Ajay Jayaram.

There were no such problems for Olympic champion Chen Long as the Chinese player won 16-21, 21-18, 21-10 over fellow countryman Huang Yuxiang.

In the women’s draw, top seed Tai Tzu Ying made it through to the quarter-finals after winning an all-Chinese Taipei encounter against Pai Yu Po 21-6, 21-8.

Spain’s Olympic women’s singles champion Carolina Marin also progressed to the next round in straight sets as the tournament’s second seed saw off Thailand’s Nitchaon Jindapol 21-14, 21-18.

She will now face another Thai player in the quarter-finals after last year’s winner Ratchanok Intanon beat compatriot Busanan Ongbamrungphan 23-21, 21-18.
