Lee Chong Wei began his bid for a 12th Badminton World Federation (BWF) Malaysia Super Series title with a first round victory over Rajiv Ouseph of England today.

The home favourite and triple Olympic silver medallist triumphed 21-16, 21-18 in front of his own fans at the Stadium Perpaduan in Kuching.

Lee, the top seed, only failed to win the tournament once between 2004 and 2014, and regained the crown last year after China's Olympic champion Chen Long triumphed in 2015.

Chen eased into the second round today as he brushed past Hong Kong's Wei Nan 21-4, 21-9.

Denmark's Viktor Axelsen, the Olympic bronze medallist, also qualified for round two thanks to a 21-12, 21-13 win over Liew Daren of Malaysia.

In the women's draw, top seed Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei beat Indonesian qualifier Lyanny Alessandra Mainaky 21-12, 21-10 to advance.

Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin was another winner after a 21-16, 21-11 win over Yip Pui Yin of Hong Kong.

Thailand's defending champion Ratchanok Intanon began with a 21-18, 21-10 triumph over Japan's Sayaka Sato, but India's PV Sindhu was knocked out.

The Indian, the Olympic silver medallist, was hoping to make it consecutive Super Series titles after her success in New Delhi last week on home soil.

However, she was ousted by China's Chen Yufei who came through 18-21, 21-19, 21-17.

Action continues in Kuching tomorrow.
