Olympic champion Carolina Marin comfortably secured her place in the quarter-finals of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) India Super Series with a straight-games victory over the host nation's Ritupama Das in New Delhi.

The Spanish top seed made light work of her Indian opponent at the Siri Fort Indoor Stadium as she progressed by virtue of a 21-13, 21-11 win.

Marin will go up against unseeded Japanese player Minatsu Mitani in the next round tomorrow.

Defending champion Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand is also through as she beat China's Zhang Yiman 21-14, 21-19.

Intanon's reward for her success is a meeting with South Korean second seed South Korean Sung Ji-hyun, who dropped just 14 points on her way to a 21-6, 21-8 success against Bulgaria's Linda Zetchiri.

"I'm not thinking about my title defence," Intanon said.

“A lot of players are playing well and it's tough.

"I'm only thinking of making the semi-finals."

It proved to be a trouble-free day for the seeded players in the women's draw as Japan's Akane Yamaguchi ousted Indonesian Lyanny Alessandra Mainaky.

Yamaguchi, the fourth seed, swept aside Mainaky with a 21-16, 21-13 win to set up a meeting with team-mate Nozomi Okuhara.

There will be an all-Indian affair in the last eight as Saina Nehwal will take on Rio 2016 silver medallist P.V Sindhu.

Nehwal earned a straight-games victory over Pornpawee Chochuwong of Thailand, progressing with a 21-14, 21-12 win, while Sindhu, the third seed, beat Saena Kawakami of Japan 21-16, 23-21.

Olympic bronze medallist Viktor Axelsen of Denmark was among the winners in the men's singles tournament as he dispatched India's Srikanth Kidambi 21-7, 21-12.

Tzu Wei Wang of Chinese Taipei, who produced arguably the shock of the day by beating fifth seed Tian Houwei of China 21-14, 21-12, awaits for Axelsen in the next round.

Hong Kong's Ng Ka Long Angus joined Tzu and Axelsen in the quarter-finals as he overcame Sourabh Verma of India 21-19, 14-21, 22-20.

He will take on Indonesia's Tommy Sugiarto tomorrow.
