Lasse Norman Hansen and Michael Mørkøv delighted the home crowd as they finished day one of the Six Day Series event in Copenhagen at the top of the standings.

The Danish duo recorded victories in the opening 75-minute Madison race and the elimination event to end the opening day with a score of 44 points at the Ballerup Super Arena.

They have a 20-point advantage over second-placed pairing Marc Hester and Jesper Mørkøv, while current overall leaders Kenny de Ketele and Moreno de Pauw of Belgium are third.

Yeory Havik and Wim Stroetinga occupy fourth spot on a score of 16 points.

Hansen and Mørkøv signalled their intentions from the outset as they won the 75-minute Madison in front of the Dutch pairing of Havik and Stroetinga.

De Ketele and De Pauw, who arrived in the Danish capital as the team to beat in the Six Day Series standings, did enough for third.

The riders from Denmark backed up their Madison success with second place in their sprint race, finishing behind compatriots Alex Rasmussen and Casper Pedersen, who also enjoyed a fruitful start to the event on home soil.

Hansen and Mørkøv continued their excellent start by reigning supreme in the elimination race, which all-but assured they would conclude day one at the top of the pile.

Trine Schmidt maintained the Danish dominance by winning the women’s elimination race, with Germany’s Gudrun Stock taking second.

Stock, who had earlier triumphed in the scratch race, tops the leaderboard, with team-mate Lisa Kullmer and Schmidt both two points adrift.

Action in Copenhagen is due to resume tomorrow.
