Qualifier James Rippey claimed a shock victory over Jonathan Ross today at the World Indoor Bowls Championships in England.

It continued a run of shock open singles results that included Scotland's 71-year-old Charles Bence beating Mark Dawes yesterday at Potters Leisure Resort in Hopton-on-Sea in Norfolk.

England's Rippey went on the attack from the outset against Ross today, who was born in Northern Ireland but now represents Scotland.

He won a topsy-turvy first set 9-6 before Ross - a world outdoor fours champion in 2004 - fought-back to claim the second by the same scoreline.

Ross prevailed 2-1 in the decider.

United States ensured some international progression by beating Jason Greenslade 7-6, 10-8.

Singles action is due to continue tomorrow before the mixed pair competition starts on Friday (January 20).
