Bangladesh's Tanbir Hayder has been reprimanded by the International Cricket Council (ICC) for using “obscene” language during today's one-day international defeat to New Zealand in Nelson.

Hayder accepted the charge as a result of the incident, which happened when he was hit for four by New Zealand batsman Neil Broom in the first ball of the 19th over.

The ICC said he had breached level one of their Code of Conduct, which relates to “using language or a gesture that is obscene, offensive or insulting during an international match”.

Cricket’s worldwide governing body have also added one demerit point to the disciplinary record of the 25-year-old, who contributed only two runs to Bangladesh’s total of 184 all out and picked up no wickets in eight overs, conceding 47 runs.

If Hayder reaches four or more demerit points within a two-year period, they will be converted into suspension points and he will be banned.

“Tanbir admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Chris Broad of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing,” the ICC said in a statement.

“The charge was levelled by on-field umpires Paul Reiffel and Chris Brown, third umpire Chettihody Shamshuddin and fourth umpire Wayne Knights.”

Bangladesh appeared to be in with a chance of successfully chasing the 252 runs required to beat New Zealand but collapsed, losing their last nine wickets for just 79 runs after reaching 105-1.

Broom was the star of the show for the Black Caps, hitting 109 not out, which included eight fours and three sixes.

Imrul Kayes’ 59 had given Bangladesh a decent platform for victory but the usual batting problems which have plagued the nation in the one-day international format returned and they were eventually skittled out for 184.

The defeat also meant they lost the three-match series, which continues at the Saxton Oval in Nelson tomorrow.
