Rio 2016 Olympic champion Carolina Marin will defend her Badminton World Federation (BWF) Hong Kong Open title this week as this year's tournament is due to begin tomorrow.

The Superseries event, due to be held at the Hong Kong Coliseum, is set to conclude on Sunday (November 27) with competitors aiming to win record high prize money of $400,000 (£320,000/€376,000).

A host of Olympic champions are set to feature this week with the gold medallists in all five competitions at Rio 2016 in line to feature.

In the women's competition, Spain's Marin headlines the seedings.

She is due to open her competition with a round one contest against Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand.

India's Rio 2016 silver medallist P.V Sindhu will be aiming to maintain her current spate of good form after she beat China's Sun Yu 21-11, 17-21, 21-11 to win her first title at Superseries level in China yesterday.

The Indian is scheduled to open her campaign with a round one contest against Lindaweni Fanetri of Indonesia.

Thailand's Ratchanok Intanon, the current world number two, is seeded second in the competition and she begins her campaign with a relatively comfortable-looking match against Xiaoyu Liang of Singapore.

The defending champion in the men's singles competition will not be featuring however as Lee Chong Wei has pulled out through injury.

Lee was forced to withdraw from the China Superseries last week with a hamstring injury, and it has once again got the better of the Malaysian before Hong Kong.

Lee was pencilled in as the top seed this week but his withdrawal means China's Rio 2016 gold medallist Chen Long will be the best ranked player.

Chen will be hoping to react positively to the disappointment he suffered yesterday on home soil in the China Superseries final in Fuzhou.

Denmark's Jan Ø. Jørgensen, who moves into the second seed position this week, upset Chen on his home turf to win 22-20, 21-13 to win his first title at Superseries level since the 2014 Indonesian Open.

Action officially begins tomorrow with a host of preliminary matches before the main draw of all five events starts on Wednesday (November 23).
