Women's Olympic champion Carolina Marin was dumped out on quarter-finals day at the Badminton World Federation (BWF) China Superseries in Fuzhou.

The Spanish Rio 2016 gold medallist was top seed at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center but suffered a last eight exit to Chinese Taipei's fifth seed Tai Tzu-ying.

Tai, bronze medallist at the Asian Games in 2014, won 21-10, 22-20 to reach the semi-finals.

She is now the highest ranked player left in the draw with the top four seeds now all out of the competition.

The Taiwanese now faces a semi-final against China's eighth seed Sun Yu, after the 2012 world junior champion eased past Denmark's Line Kjærsfeldt, 21-19, 21-3.

South Korea's sixth seed Sung Ji-hyun also remains in contention thanks to a 22-20, 10-21, 21-18 win over Japan's Akane Yamaguchi.

She will now play India's seventh seed P.V Sindhu in the last four, after the Rio 2016 silver medallist ousted China's Youth Olympic Games champion He Bingjiao 22-20, 21-10.

In the men's competition, Chinese Olympic champion Chen Long remains on course to win his home competition after a 21-15, 21-14 win over India's Ajay Jayaram.

Second-seeded Chen is the top ranked player at the tournament after Malaysia's number one seed Lee Chong Wei withdrew through injury, and is looking for a fourth China Superseries title.

He will play number three seed Viktor Axelsen, the European champion, in the last four after the Dane saw off Japan's qualifier Takuma Ueda 21-11, 21-6.

This clash will be a repeat of the Rio 2016 semi-final won by Chen, with Axelsen going on to clinch bronze.

A second Denmark player reached the last four as number four seed Jan Ø. Jørgensen defeated fifth seed Tian Houwei of China, 14-21, 21-16, 21-14.

He will now meet Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin for a place in the final, after the Malaysian proved too strong for China's Qiao Bin, 21-19, 21-7.

The semi-finals will be played in Fuzhou tomorrow.
