Olympic champion Chen Long won a repeat of his Rio 2016 last four clash to reach the final of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) China Superseries at Haixia Olympic Sports Centre in Fuzhou.

The Chinese player beat Denmark's Viktor Axelsen in the semi-finals at the Olympics in August and proved too strong for the European champion again.

Long is seeded second as he bids to win his home tournament for a fourth time but became the best ranked player in the draw when Malaysia's number one seed Lee Chong Wei - the Rio 2016 silver medallist - withdrew through injury.

He beat Axelsen, who went on to win a bronze medal at RIo 2016, in three games, 21-18, 9-21, 21-14.

His opponent in the final is due to be another Dane after fourth seed Jan Ø. Jørgensen negotiated his way through.

Jørgensen also needed three games to beat Malaysia's unseeded player Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, 22-20, 20-22, 21-7.

In the women's tournament, China will also be hopeful of home gold after eighth seed Sun Yu reached the final.

She proved too strong for Chinese Taipei's fifth seed Tai Tzu-ying, the conqueror of Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marin in the quarter-finals, 21-8, 23-21.

Sun is now scheduled to meet India's Rio 2016 silver medallist P.V Sindhu in the final after she came from behind to progress.

The seventh seed eventually got the better of South Korea's sixth seed Sung Ji-hyun, 11-21, 23-21, 21-19.

In the men's doubles, the final will be contested by Indonesia's Markus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo and Mathias Boe and Carsten Mogensen of Denmark.

The Indonesians progressed courtesy of a 16-21, 26-24, 21-19 win over China's top seeds Chai Biao and Hong Wei.

Boe and Mogensen ousted another Chinese pair, Liu Cheng and Zhang Nan, 23-21, 21-17.

In the women's doubles, South Korean sixth seeds Chang Ye-na and Lee So-hee will meet unseeded home duo Huang Dongping and Li Yinhui for the title.

The Koreans disappointed home fourth seeds Luo Ying and Luo Yu with a 21-14, 24-22 success with the Chinese finalists beating Danish third seeds Christinna Pedersen and Kamilla Rytter Juhl, 21-16, 21-18.

China will also have a chance of mixed doubles gold thanks to Zhang and Li's last four win over South Korea's top ranked pair Ko Sung-hyun and Kim Ha-na, 21-19, 10-21, 21-15.

They will play Indonesians Tontowi Ahmad and Liliyana Natsir, the second seeds, who got the better of South Koreans Choi Sol-gyu and Chae Yoo-jung, 21-17, 25-23.

All five finals are due to be played in Fuzhou tomorrow.
