Spain's Olympic champion Carolina Marín will face a player from the host nation in the first round of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) China Superseries after qualifying matches started the tournament at the Haixia Olympic Sports Center in Fuzhou today.

The 23-year-old Rio 2016 champion will play China's Ji Shuting in the first round after she won her preliminary match today, seeing off American Maya Chen 21-11, 21-16.

Another qualifier in the women's singles was China's Peng Qin, who saw off Su Yu Chen of Chinese Taipei 21-13, 21-15.

She will now meet her compatriot Chen Yufei, who was crowned as the world junior champion in Bilbao in Spain last week.

Another all Chinese clash was also confirmed for the opening round thanks to Zhang Yiman coming through qualifying against team-mate Li Yun, 21-12, 21-13.

She will now play He Bingjiao, who won the gold medal at the 2014 Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing.

In the men's competition, it has now been confirmed that Malaysia's Olympic silver medallist Lee Chong Wei has pulled out due to a hamstring injury.

Lee was the top seed with his withdrawal meaning China's Rio 2016 gold medallist Chen Long will be the best ranked player on home soil.

Qualifiers today included Chinese Taipei's Lin Yu-hsien, who beat Yan Tuck Chan of the United States 21-4, 21-6.

He will now play Malaysia's Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin in round one.

Also through is China's Guo Kai, who proved too strong for Lee Cheuck Yiu of Hong Kong, 21-16, 26-24.

He will play Japan's Kazumasa Sakai in the first round, who replaced Lee in the draw.

China's Zhao Junpeng will meet compatriot Shi Yuqi, the boys' Youth Olympic champion, after negotiating his qualifier against Japan's Riichi Takeshita, 21-16, 21-13.

First round matches will be played at the tournament tomorrow.
