Canada were crowned winners of the World Men's Curling Championship for the 35th time after winning a tightly contested final against Denmark at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel today.

The Canadian team had been able to rest yesterday after their 5-3 win over the Danes in the first and second page play-off.

Although the Danish team came through their semi-final against the United States, they began the contest as the clear underdogs against a team who had only lost one of their 12 matches at the competition.

Denmark’s skip Rasmus Stjerne gave his team a chance of an upset after putting them into a 2-1 lead after the third end of the final.

They were behind at the halfway point of the match, however, when Canadian skip Kevin Koe scored two points, before Stjerne immediately drew his team level in the sixth.

After the following two ends were blanked, Koe struck to give his team a decisive 5-3 lead in the ninth, with the Danes then conceding the contest.

The United States claimed the first medal at the Championships since 2007 after they defeated Japan for the second consecutive day.

In yesterday’s page play-off the American team had emerged as 5-4 victors and their bronze medal match proved equally close, with the score standing at 6-6 after the first seven ends.

American skip John Shuster put his team into a 7-6 lead in the eighth.

He stole another point in the final end to deny the Japanese team a first World Championship medal.
