Canada continued their fine form to book their place in the World Men's Curling Championship final after securing a tightly fought victory over Denmark in the first and second page play-off at the St. Jakobshalle arena in Basel today.

The Canadian team, led by skip Kevin Koe, had earned 10 victories from their 11 round robin matches to finish top of the group standings.

It gave them the advantage of having the last stone in the opening end of the contest, but they were only able to take a 1-0 lead after Koe’s final shot proved too strong.

Both teams continued to trade points, with Denmark’s skip Rasmus Stjerne hoping to build on his team’s excellent victory over the defending champion Sweden yesterday.

The contest was tied at 2-2 after the first six ends, but Koe produced an excellent shot in the seventh to score three points to put his team into a commanding position.

Despite their best efforts, Denmark could only narrow the gap to 5-3 in the remaining three ends of the tie, with the result ensuring that record 34-time winners Canada will at least claim a silver medal.

“It’s fun curling in these games, you want to feel some pressure and intensity because that means you’re playing in a big game," Koe said afterwards.

“Both teams played well, and it came down to one end, really.

“We knew we were in the neighbourhood on that shot {in the seventh end] and the guys did a great job.

“They didn’t have a lot of room to manoeuvre with because we were basically drawing to the side of the button.”

Tomorrow will see Japan and the United States compete in the third and fourth page play-off, with the winners set to compete against Denmark in the semi-final match later in the today.

The victors will then advance to meet Canada in the gold medal contest on Sunday (April 10).
