Uzbek Tigers booked their place in the play-off stage of the World Series of Boxing with a fixture to spare after whitewashing the Azerbaijan Baku Fires 5-0 in Tashkent.

The franchise, competing in their first season, had recorded three victories and one defeat from their opening matches, but knew another win would see them advance.

Nodirjon Mirzakhmedov got the hosts off to a perfect start as he delivered an accomplished display in his 46 to 49 kilogram light flyweight encounter with Rasul Saliev.

The 21-year-old fighter particularly dominated the final round to help him claim a unanimous points win.

The Tigers’ unbeaten under 56kg bantamweight Abdulkhay Sharakhmatov continued his run by beating Yashar Magomedov on points.

Zaur Abdullayev looked to get the Baku Fires back into the contest by winning at under 64kg light welterweight, but he ultimately fell to a split decision loss to Fazliddin Meliboev.

The first two judges scored the contest 49-46 and 48-47 in favour of the Tigers’ boxer, while the third official gave it to Abdullayev 48-47.

With Meliboev’s triumph, the Tigers were assured of victory on the night but under 75kg middleweight Ulugbek Khakberdiev remained determined to add further gloss to the scoreline during his first appearance of the season.

The 23-year-old outclassed Levani Lukhutashvili to win via knock-out.

Sardorbek Begaliev ended the evening in style for the Tigers, with the 91kg heavyweight marking his debut with a unanimous points win over Haji Murtuzaliyev.

The victory ensured the Tigers a top two finish in Group D, with the Baku Fires now unable to overtake them in the standings.

Despite the defeat, Baku still could seal the second qualification spot but they would need to win their final fixture against the Puerto Rico Hurricanes.

They would also require Astana Arlans Kazakhstan to lose their remaining two contests.
