Egypt is the clear medal leader after eight days of competition. The country has won a total of 144 medals (83 gold, 33 silver and 28 bronze) as of Saturday 16 March. Nigeria is in second place with 68 medals: 25 gold, 18 silver and 25 bronze. More than 5,000 athletes from 51 countries are competing for medals and records in 30 sports at this year's event.

The Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) will not boycott this year's Paris Olympics, its president has said. The move comes despite restrictions imposed on its athletes by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as a result of the Kremlin's offensive in Ukraine.

The Estonian, Latvian and Lithuanian Olympic Committees have sent a joint letter to the International Olympic Committee regarding the eligibility of Russian and Belarusian athletes to participate in the Paris 2024 Games and their presence at the Opening Ceremony.

The International Olympic Committee has no plans to sanction Israel over its war in Gaza before the Paris Olympics. "It's out of the question to think about sanctions (against Israel) at this stage," said Pierre-Olivier Beckers-Vieujan.

Many countries build temporary pavilions during the Olympic Games. These are used for national promotion as well as providing space for fans and official events. Saudi Arabia is negotiating to build a national pavilion during the Paris Olympics. It will be built in the Invalides complex, where Napoleon's tomb is located.

The French President inaugurated the on Thursday the Olympic Village on the banks of the Seine, north of Paris, which will host nearly 14,500 athletes and their technical teams from 26 July to 11 August.

The 2027 World Athletics Championships will welcome the biggest stars back to Beijing, 12 years after the Chinese capital successfully hosted the premier athletics event and almost two decades after the Beijing Olympic Games.
