The last day of the World Sambo Championships 2023 brought joy and disappointment to the host country.

In the morning session three Armenian athletes were able to reach the finals, but all of them lost in the evening finals.

The home crowd’s biggest hope was 79 kg sport sambist Boris Shatveryan, who earlier this year had won CIS second games. In the preliminaries he defeated one of the main contenders Egor Sukhaparov from FIAS 1 and former world champion Aleksand Koksha from FIAS 2. But in the final bout he was unable to gain any points and lost to Bulgarian Ivan Harkov 0-5.

“Maybe I didn’t manage to recover after difficult bouts in the morning. Overall I am happy for this medal, of course there were some mistakes, and I hope to correct them and become world champion in the future”, Shatveryan told the journalists.

The other Armenian athlete who lost in the finals was 98 kg sport sambist Davit Grigoryan. He was unable to beat in the final returning world champion from FIAS 1 Anton Konovalov.

“I feel that it was more difficult to defend the title than to claim it for the first time. In some moments it was harder, in some moments easier…”, said Konovalov to Insidethegames.

Earlier in the semifinals Konovalov defeated his last year’s final rival Daviti Loriashvili. The latter managed to claim the bronze medal, which was 9th in his career.

Said Saidov was another returning world champion who managed to defend the title. In the final bout of combat sambo’s 98 kg weight category he defeated Armenia’s Avetik Poghosyan.

Russia’s athletes didn’t make any mistakes in day 3 finals of combat sambo. Besides Saidov it were Rustam Taidov (71 kg) and Mikhail Kashurnikov (+98 kg) who managed to win the champion’s title.

“I am very happy with this title. Now I am planning to battle in MMA and win another couple of world champion titles in combat sambo”, said Kashurnikov to Insidethegames.

Russia’s men’s team had an almost ideal result on day 3, but the women's team managed to claim only one bronze medal. Returning world champion Daria Rechkalova came only third in Yerevan. Rechkalova lost her quarterfinal bout of the super heavyweight category to Croatia’s Katarina Lea Gobec. But Gobec also wasn’t able to win the gold medal, as she lost to Romania’s Katerina Moskalova in the final bout.

“I won my final bout very early and the emotions were very mixed. I was very happy when I reached the finals, because it was my first final in the world championships. That’s why I was calmer when I won the title. I came here to battle till the end, I wanted to win and eventually I did it”, Maskalova told Insidethegames.

Kazakhstan’s Arailym Abenova managed to bring her country the only gold medal of the championship. In the final bout she defeated FIAS 2’s Zhanara Kusanova.

“I still don’t feel that I am a champion. Maybe I can feel it when I hear the national anthem of Kazakhstan. Of course I was hoping to win the gold medal. When I was battling I didn't feel that I would be the champion, and after the final bout I was emotionless”, said Abenova to Insidethegames.

Russia’s team dominance was even stronger this year. Russia’s sport sambo team claimed 5 gold medals from 7, and combat sambo’s team won 6 gold medals from 7, and it was not surprising that they won the team title in all categories.
