Ukraine has withdrawn from the World Junior Judo Championships on the eve of the event after saying seven Russians had been approved to compete as neutrals.

The Ukrainian Judo Federation (FDU) said one of the seven, Dmitry Yakushev, was an "active military man" although he was reportedly later blocked from the event in Odivelas in Portugal.

In April the International Judo Federation (IJF) ruled that judoka from Russia and Belarus should be allowed to compete as individual neutral athletes in time for the World Championships in Doha in May.

This rolled back the governing body's original stance which had banned Russia and Belarus outright following the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

The FDU boycotted the World Championships in Doha and will not now be present in Odivelas either.

Judo was one of many sports which relaxed its rules on Russian participation after the International Olympic Committee said athletes should be allowed to compete neutrally unless they were in open support of the war or affiliated with the military.

"The International Judo Federation, as always, at the last moment, admitted seven Russian athletes to the World Junior Championships in a neutral status, one of whom is an active military man," said FDU President Mikhail Koshlyak.

"So the Ukrainian team refused to participate in the World Junior Championship.

"I would like to emphasise again my position as the President of the FDU, the position of the Presidium of the National Federation regarding such decisions of the IJF is unchanged.

"And it will remain unchanged as long as there is a war in Ukraine, while people are dying every day, while the enemy is constantly shelling hospitals, schools, shops, destroying cities and villages.

"Teams from aggressor countries have no place in world sports.

"Judo teaches us to respect our opponent and demonstrate this respect on the mat.

"But in our realities this is impossible.

"And this whole story with 'neutral' athletes is simply fake.

"After all, the entire civilised world understands that 'neutrality' hides the athletes of a country waging a bloody war right in the centre of Europe."
