Sweden's European champion pairing David Åhman and Jonatan Hellvig have won the International Volleyball Federation (FIVB) men's Beach Pro Tour Elite16 event at the Am Rothenbaum Stadium in Hamburg.

Åhman and Hellvig defeated Italians Paolo Nicolai and Samuele Cottafava 21-16, 22-24, 21-19.

"It was a crazy match, we’ve played them three times in the last few weeks and all matches went to three sets and were super close," Åhman said.

"They’re an amazing team, we had to give our all and it was very close, but we made it, and we’re so happy."

Bronze went to Olympic champions Anders Mol and Christian Sørum of Norway who defeated Brazilians Andre Loyola and George Wanderley in straight sets by  21-19, 21-16 .

Åhman and Hellvig had been absent from the circuit for two months because Hellvig had sustained a fractured right hand.

"My hand is fine right now, I don’t feel anything," Hellvig said.

"Unfortunately we missed a few tournaments, so now we’re very excited to be back, but also super focused in every training session and every match."

After losing their opening pool match in Hamburg, they won their next five matches on the way to the title.

In the women’s competition, top ranked 'Duda' Lisboa and Ana Patrícia Ramos defeated Taryn Kloth and Kristen Nuss of the United States in straight-sets 21-16, 21-17.

It was their third tour victory in the last four matches but they had finished only fifth in their last tournament three weeks ago.

"It's always a lot of fun playing here, the last tournament was very hard for us, so we prepared really well last week and took this one match by match and point by point, and it worked," Duda said.

"We've played the Americans a lot lately and it's never been easy," Ramos added.

"Having several Brazilians here pushing us meant a lot and helped us keep going this week, Our fans were loud and it was very special to play in front of them."

Germany’s Svenja Müller and Cinja Tillmann beat  Carol and Bárbara of Brazil 21-15, 21-19 for the bronze medal.

The eighth event of the Elite16 tour is set to begin in Paris on September 27.
