World Athletics President Sebastian Coe has insisted here "there is space" for the planned new "best of the best" event in 2026, claiming top-level athletes want "more competition" and "greater financial security from the sport".

Plans for the event staged under a new format were revealed earlier this month for 2026, the only year for the remainder of the decade without an Olympic Games or World Athletics Championships scheduled.

The knock-on effect of the postponement to the Tokyo 2020 Olympics has already led to World Championships being staged in back-to-back years in Eugene and Budapest.

However, Coe rejected the suggestion that an additional major event risked overcrowding the calendar which also includes continental Championships, and expressed his desire for more events on the level of the one in Budapest with "a billion people watching".

"I think there is space and I think it is incumbent upon all of us in the sport to improve the quality of all our events and give as many opportunities," the International Olympic Committee (IOC) member and two-time 1500 metres Olympic champion with Britain said.

"Athletes have always had to triage.

"The problem with the Area Championships is that I think for some of them it has been an easy option not to go because of maybe the service and quality of those Championships.

"I would prefer to give them tougher challenges and a tougher set of choices because our events are getting better, but we can't have it both ways here.

"We want our athletes to compete more often, and on balance I don't think they do, and we want the season to be longer because May to September is not sustainable."

Coe insisted the additional event in 2026 would benefit athletes competitively and financially.

"There will be a balance to be struck, but I think the top athletes are wanting more competition and they’re certainly wanting to derive greater financial security from our sport, and I can see no other way around that than staging these global events," he said.

"We can't go missing at any stage in our season, and if we can extend the season then we’ve got the potential to actually grow the number of events."

Although details of the format are still being worked on, Coe revealed that the planned event would be "unashamedly a TV product" with "entertainment value".

He also pinpointed the development of continental Championships beyond Europe as "one of our focuses going forward", insisting they "should be more reflective of the quality" of athletes in each of World Athletics' areas.

Coe was re-elected as World Athletics President on Thursday (August 17) for a third and final term through to 2027, although has been tipped as a potential candidate to succeed Germany's Thomas Bach as IOC President in 2025.
