The North African country's previous best gold-medal haul of 91 came when it last staged the tournament in 2004.

Algeria broke that record today as they extended their lead at the top of the standings with 222 medals including 96 golds, 63 silvers and 63 bronzes.

The women’s road race title was won by Chahra Azzouz, topping an Algerian one-two-three in 1hr 43min 56sec.

She saw off the challenge of Khadidja Araoui and Yasime Elmeddah who came second and third respectively.

Algeria also captured the women’s road race team title in 5:14:56 as Syria placed second in 5:16:30 and Saudi Arabia finished third in 5:24:11.

There was also delight for Algeria in karate with Cylia Oikene and Louiza Abouriche capturing women’s kumite titles in the respective under-50 kilogram and under-55kg categories.

Ouikene saw off Morocco’s Chaimae El Hayti 6-2, while Abouriche defeated Jordan’s Leen Ameen Mohamad Mansoud.

Tunisia’s Wafa Mahjoub denied Algeria another karate gold when she overcame Chaima Midi in the women’s kumite under-61kg final.

Among the other kumite title winners were Jordan’s Omar Issa Omar Shaqrah and Abdel Rahman Tayel Hayel Almasatfa, while Morocco captured the women’s kata team crown.

Egypt’s Naema Said clinched women’s 71 kilogram clean jerk and snatch titles after lifting 130kg and 105kg respectively.

The men’s 89kg snatch gold went to Algeria’s Faris Touairi after making 164kg - just 2kg heavier than Iraq’s Safaa Rashid Mahmood Aljumaili managed.

The Iraqi lifter also fell agonisingly short in the men’s 89kg clean jerk as Oman’s Amur Salim Ramadhan Al-Khanjari won with 203kg.

Competition is due to conclude tomorrow before the Closing Ceremony is set to be held on Saturday (July 15).
