The Canadian Paralympic Committee (CPC) has granted 18 sporting organisations funding totalling CAD200,000 (£118,000/$151,000/€138,000).

The recipients span seven provinces and are being offered between CAD5,000 (£2,900/$3,700/€3,500) and CAD 15,000 (£8,900/$11,300/€10,300).

The money comes from the Paralympic Sport Development Fund which has granted more than CAD1.2 million (£710,000/$900,000/€830,000) since its inception in 2016.

"Congratulations to each recipient of the Paralympic Sport Development Fund and thank you for your incredibly valuable work and leadership," said CPC chief executive Karen O'Neill.

"At the foundation of a strong, healthy, growing Paralympic sport system is quality programming and opportunities to participate in sport at all levels, just like what the grantees provide.

"It has been a challenging few years for many organisations, but these recipients have continued to introduce more people to Para sport, help their participants further develop their skills, and evolve their overall programming to best fit the needs of their athletes."

Clubs from a variety of sports including boccia, Alpine skiing, athletics, badminton, equestrian, ice hockey, Nordic skiing, swimming, table tennis, basketball, curling, fencing, and tennis have received funds.

The funding initiative is designed to support developing athletes and to enhance programmes at entry level competition stages and provincial levels.

"Funding can cover recruitment, coaching, equipment, competition and club development, training camps and any other area that contributes to enhanced capacity for programmes, athletes or teams on a sport specific Paralympic pathway," read a CPC statement.
