Egyptians Hania El Hammamy and Nour El Sherbini continued their perfect records in the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour Finals to top the women's groups and advance to the semi-finals.

World number three El Hammamy leapfrogged compatriot and tournament favourite Nouran Gohar in Group A to take pole position.

She dispatched Belgium's Nele Gilis 11-9, 11-8 in today's opening match in the Eastown District New Cairo.

Gilis went into the match needing to win 2-0 to take El Hammamy's place in the semi-finals and it looked like she could do just that after a formidable start.

She took a 9-5 lead in the first game but was not able to see it out and squandered a power play in the process.

"I had a bad start, I was playing shots into the floor, so I tried to push myself mentally and to be sharper," said El Hammamy.

"I wanted to make it tough for her in the fast even if I lost it.

"Gladly I was able to come back from being down in the first and win it."

El Sherbini also made it three wins from three as she ended Georgina Kennedy's chances of qualifying.

She had already booked her place in the semi-finals but needed at least a game to secure top spot in Group B.

The world number two showed her class to wrap up an 11-3, 11-4 victory in just 18 minutes against the Englishwoman.

Another Egyptian, Nour El Tayeb, claimed the last semi-final spot after battling past New Zealand's Joelle King to take second place in Group B.

El Tayeb won in straight sets after 30 minutes by a close scoreline of 11-10, 11-8.

In the men's event, England's Mohamed ElShorbagy beat Commonwealth Games champion Paul Coll of New Zealand 11-8, 11-10 to advance.

He joins Egyptian Ali Farag, who topped Group B, despite struggling with an abductor injury suffered in the previous outing.

As a result, he adopted an aggressive strategy in an attempt to close out the match as quickly as possible and it paid off as he went through after 35 minutes.

Farag's top spot was confirmed prior to the start of play as his countryman Tarek Momen had to withdraw due to injury, giving him maximum points.

Egypt's Mazen Hesham clinched the final qualification spot for the men's event as he downed countryman Mostafa Asal after 38 minutes 2-11, 11-8, 11-5.
