Egyptian duo Ali Farag and Nouran Gohar have returned to the top of squash’s world rankings after winning the El Gouna International titles.

Victory in the men’s event saw Farag extend his unbeaten run to 20 matches as he clinched a fourth successive trophy on the Professional Squash Association (PSA) World Tour.

Fourth seed Farag took on compatriot and third seed Mostafa Asal in the final and won in four games in a hard-fought encounter at the El Gouna Conference and Cultural Center.

From 9-7 behind, Farag closed out game one 12-10, before Asal won the second game by the same scoreline.

Farag then took control of the contest in the next two games, winning them 11-6 and 11-2, as he sealed the win, and his 33rd PSA title in 62 minutes.

Farag had reached the final by overcoming Diego Elias of Peru in four games in his semi-final, while Asal had to battle past compatriot Mohamed ElShorbagy in his semi-final, in a contest that lasted five games and 110 minutes.

In the women’s final, there was more Egyptian success with victory going to Gohar against Belgium’s Nele Gilis, as Gohar landed a 22nd PSA title and fifth of the season.

Gohar, a runner-up at the previous two editions of this tournament, faced Gilis, the first Belgian ever to reach the final of a major PSA tournament, with Gilis coming out firing in the early stages.

Gohar won 11-5, 11-7, 11-9 in just under an hour with some intense hitting helping her to a straight games victory, although the Egyptian had to come from 9-8 behind in game three to seal the win.

Gilis had reached the final with an unexpected straight games success against seven-time world champion Nour El Sherbini of Egypt.

Meanwhile Gohar reached the final with a thrilling four-game triumph against compatriot Hania El Hammamy, the defending champion, in a contest that lasted 107 minutes, and was the fifth-longest women’s match of all time.

Players will now be turning their attention to the climax to the 2022-2023 PSA World Tour season, the World Tour Finals, due to be held in Cairo, Egypt, from June 20 to 25.
