The United States won the men's and women's titles at the hockey5s Pan American Cup, with both victories coming through penalty shootouts ©FIH

The United States claimed double gold at the hockey5s Pan American Cup, winning the men’s and women’s titles.

Both finals went to penalty shootouts, with the women’s final featuring ten goals.

In the women’s final, where the US were taking on Uruguay, the US scored twice in the opening five minutes through Linnea Gonzales and Carter Ayars.

Manuela Quinones halved the deficit for Uruguay in the eighth minute before the US’ two-goal lead was restored just before the break by Charlotte De Vries.

Just after the restart Lora Clarke extended the US advantage to 4-1, before a brace from Manuela Vilar cut the gap to 4-3.

The action kept coming thick and fast in Kingston, Jamaica, with Gonzales scoring her second of the game to make it 5-3 to the US.

Camila Piazza then scored twice in three minutes to level the score at 5-5, with neither team able to find a winner in the last three minutes.

The US won the penalty shoot-out 3-1 with successful efforts from Clarke and Gonzales.

Piazza, whose late double took the game to penalties, made the crucial miss in the shootout.

The US won all three of their pool matches, beating Costa Rica 8-0, Paraguay 5-0 and Panama 8-0.

They defeated Jamaica 3-0 in their crossover match, before edging past Trinidad and Tobago 2-1 in a hard-fought semi-final.

In the bronze medal match, Paraguay defeated Trinidad and Tobago 2-0 to secure a place in the Hockey5s World Cup, due to be held in Oman in 2024.

In the men’s final, the US faced Trinidad and Tobago, with Pierre Mickell giving Trinidad and Tobago the lead in the opening minute.

Tyler Sundeen levelled for the US just before the break, with Marcano Teague putting Trinidad and Tobago back in front in the 15th minute.

Michael Barminski Jr levelled for the US two minutes later, and with neither side able to find a winner the contest went to penalties.

Ajai Dhadwal netted twice in the shootout, including what proved to be the winner, as the US took the shootout 3-2.

The US won all three of their group stage matches beating Jamaica 4-2, Panama 5-0 and Costa Rica 4-0.

They were also a dominant winner in their semi-final, as they overcame Paraguay 5-1.

In the third place match, Jamaica defeated Paraguay 5-2 to secure a place at the Hockey5s World Cup 2024.

The tournament is due to take place at Muscat from January 24 to 31, with 16 men’s and women’s teams set to compete.
