Kao Miura and Mao Shimada secured a men's and women's singles double for Japan at the International Skating Union (ISU) World Junior Figure Skating Championships in Calgary.

Four Continents champion Miura dominated the men's singles, leading with an 85.11 points routine in the short programme, and following it with 179.63 on the free skating to finish with 267.74 at the WinSport Arena A.

Miura had to settle for 13th place in this event last year, so was delighted at his performance in the Canadian city.

"It is difficult to compare the medals, they are all precious to me," he said.

"Last year I was third at Four Continents and came in aiming to win, so it is a satisfying result.

"As for this World Junior gold medal - last year I was injured and I was not satisfied with the result.

"This time I came here to redeem myself, to get revenge.

"It is a different kind of satisfaction but satisfying all the same."

Shimada is the seventh Japanese woman to win this title, but the first since Marin Honda at Debrecen seven years ago.

Previous champions have included Miki Ando, the 2004 winner, who went on to lift the senior title in 2007 and 2011.

Naoki Rossi in second with 220.68 points became the first Swiss man to win a medal at the World Junior Championships since 1977, and Japan's Nozomu Yoshioka rose from seventh to third in the free skating, finishing on 217.79.

Shimada was similarly dominant to her compatriot Miura in the women's singles.

She scored 71.78 points in the short programme, with last year's silver medallist Shin Ji-a of South Korea just 0.59 behind.

Shimada's personal best 152.76 in the free skating earned her a total of 224.45 points, helping her to finish more than 22 clear of Shin on 201.90.

Ami Nakai of Japan took the bronze medal with 197.40 points.

The ice dance was won by Kateřina Mrázková and Daniel Mrázek, who became the first Czech pair to win a gold at the ISU World Junior Championships.

They scored 71.19 points in the rhythm dance and 106.17 in the free dance to finish with a total of 177.36.

Hannah Lim and Ye Quan of South Korea placed second with 174.39 points, while Canada's Nadiia Bashynska and Peter Beaumont were third with 169.13.

The other gold medallists were the United States' Sophia Baram and Daniel Tioumentsev in the pairs event.

They notched 66.95 in the short programme and 116.52 in the free skating to top score in both elements and finish with 183.47 points.

Having held an overnight lead, they found out on the morning of the free skating that coach Todd Sand had been hospitalised, and Tioumentsev said competing for him helped spur them to victory.

"It was a definite down-turn for me and Sophia," Tioumentsev commented.

"We skated for Todd and for everyone that has helped us through the season.

"It was very hard and we tried to remember what Todd told us - to stay in the moment."

Baram added: "It hit me so hard, I was really sad.

"We are sending a lot of prayers and today we skated for him and for everyone who supported us.

"We love you Todd."

Anastasia Golubeva and Hektor Giotopoulos Moore of Australia earned the silver medal for the second year running with 170.36 points, and there was a bronze medal for Ukraine's Violetta Sierova and Ivan Khobta with 159.39.

The World Junior Figure Skating Championships was open to athletes who were aged between 13 and 18 on July 1 2022, with the maximum age limit 21 for males in the pair and ice dance.

Russia and Belarus were unable to take part because of the war in Ukraine.
