The organisers of the upcoming Birmingham 2022 World Games, have launched the commemorative brick programme, allowing people to purchase a customised piece of memorabilia.

It offers individuals, families and businesses an opportunity to have their bricks installed across from the Protective Stadium, which is to hold the Opening and Closing Ceremonies.

The stadium is being built as the home of the University of Alabama at Birmingham American football team too.

The bricks will be placed at the World Games Plaza and next to restaurants in the Alabaman city's Uptown District.

"The 2022 World Games commemorative brick programme provides another powerful way for individuals and businesses to show their civic pride and leave a permanent mark in our city's rich sports history," said Nick Sellers, chief executive of the 2022 World Games.

"With thousands of athletes and fans from more than 100 countries coming to visit Birmingham next summer, the World Games 2022 Plaza allows us to welcome our visitors, show them our signature Southern hospitality and showcase the amazing Birmingham of the 21st century."

A four-by-eight inch brick can be bought for $250 (£185/€216), while an eight-by-eight inch brick costs $500 (£370/€432).

These can be customised with three lines of text or a company logo.

The last day for these to be ordered is December 31 for installation.

The Birmingham 2022 World Games are scheduled to take place from July 7 to 17 2022, having been postponed from 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Because of COVID-19, the Tokyo 2020 Olympics were moved back a year, causing a clash with the World Games, which decided to move back to 2022.
