The Olympic Flame will flicker and die at the end of the Closing Ceremony here in Tokyo tomorrow and teams are now choosing their flag bearer from those athletes still in Japan.

Modern pentathlete Natalya Coyle has been selected for Ireland.

She finished 28th overall in the women's event.

"I’m still a bit shocked by it all and overwhelmed by it all," Coyle said.

"It’s an incredible honour to be able to walk the team out to the Closing Ceremony and to carry the flag.

"I think it’s going to be pretty overwhelming; it’s going to be amazing, and I’m really looking forward to it now.

"I just can’t put into words, to be nominated and to accept it, it’s a highlight for me."

United States javelin thrower Kara Winger is to set the seal on her career at her fourth and last Olympics by carrying her country's flag.

"There’s no better way to conclude my career as an Olympic athlete than to lead the US team into the Closing Ceremony," Winger said.

"On behalf of Team USA, we want to thank the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, the people of Tokyo and the country of Japan for hosting these Olympic Games and bringing the world back together again through sport."

The Australians have chosen sailing gold medallist Mat Belcher as their flag bearer.

He won 470 gold with Will Ryan. Belcher had also won gold at London 2012.

"This has been an historic Games for all sorts of reasons and of course personally satisfying to win that gold with Will," Belcher said.

"This has been a wonderful team that has achieved so much.

"To lead them into the Closing Ceremony means so much.

"I will be carrying the flag not just for those of us who are here but all those now in quarantine back home or headed elsewhere. This will be for all of us."

Belcher had carried the Olympic flag as a youngster at Sydney 2000. When the Summer Olympics were last held in Tokyo in 1964, it was swimmer Dawn Fraser who carried the flag.

India have chosen bronze medal winning freestyle wrestler Bajrang Bajrang as their standard bearer.

The Closing Ceremony is traditionally more informal than the Opening Ceremony.

The teams enter without distinction of nationality as they have done every year since 1956 when 16-year-old Australian John Ian Wing made the suggestion.
