Dutch rider Lorena Wiebes earned her second victory in this year’s Giro Donne as she proved herself unmatchable once again in the sprint to take stage eight - but her compatriot Anna van der Breggen still firmly holds the Maglia Rosa as overall leader.

With two stages remaining before the race concludes in Cormons on Sunday (July 11) van der Breggen, the defending champion, heads the general classification with two SD Worx team mates in second and third place.

Ashleigh Moolman-Pasio of South Africa is 2min 55sec back, and Dutch rider Demi Vollering is at 3:07.

Today's flat 129.4 kilometres stage from San Vendemiamo to Mortelgiano was another invitation to the sprinters to step on it, and Wiebes, riding for DSM proved her point again as she finished ahead of the Danish rider who had won a second stage two days before, Movistar’s Emma Norsgaard, clocking 3hr 10min 01sec.

The 22-year-old was led out by team mate Coryn Rivera as DSM made their move 300 metres from the end.

Home rider Maria Vittoria Sperotto was third for AR Monex, in front of Germany’s Lisa Brennauer, riding for Ceratizit-WNT.

Tomorrow the race will involve a 122.6km run from Feletto Umberto to Monte Matajur, and it is due to conclude on Sunday with a 113km stage from Capriva del Druili to Cormons.
