Spain's Bizkaia-Durango has announced its withdrawal from the Giro Donne due to a positive COVID-19 test within the team, meaning they pulled their last rider left in the race before stage seven yesterday.

In what has been a tumultuous campaign for the Basque outfit, who lost four of its six riders after stage four, with Sandra Alonso Dominguez, Elizabeth Holden, Ariana Gilabert Vilaplana and Iurani Blanco Calbet all being cut as they were not within 30 per cent of the winning time in the 11.2-kilometre time trial.

Emilie Fortin then failed to finish stage six before Lucía González was pulled following the positive test within the team.

"In the last hours a positive case of COVID-19 has been detected within the Bizkaia-Durango team that has been present in the Giro d'Italia Donne," said the team in a statement.

"As a precautionary measure, it has been decided to withdraw the team from the Giro, no longer taking part in today's stage".

González did not start the seventh stage - a 109km route from Soprazocco di Gavardo to Puegnago del Garda.

Team Jumbo-Visma's Marianne Vos of The Netherlands won that stage, while compatriot Anna van der Breggen of SD Worx remains in the lead as she looks to defend her 2020 title.

Bizkaia-Durango were forced to pull out of a home race, Navarra Classics, in May after a positive COVID-19 test within the team.
