The Brazilian Olympic Committee (COB) has announced a Tokyo 2020 partnership with the comic book series Turma da Mônica.

Known in English as Monica's Gang or Monica and Friends, the comic was created by Mauricio de Sousa and is popular in Brazil and across the world.

As part of the deal characters will demonstrate support for Brazilian athletes as they prepare for next year's Olympic Games in Japan.

The partnership has been announced to mark the one-year-to-go celebrations before the Opening Ceremony on July 24, 2020.

"Mônica, Cebolinha, Magali, Cascão and all the other characters from Mônica's team will join Team Brazil fans, as well as many other Brazilian fans, their age or older, who grew up reading my children's stories," said De Sousa.

"It is a great pride to be part of Brazil at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games."

Brazil will be heading to Tokyo four years after hosting their own Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

"The partnership with Turma da Mônica is a way for the COB to get even closer to the Brazilian fans," said COB communication and marketing director Manoela Penna.

"The characters of Mauricio de Sousa go through generations and that is what Team Brazil represents, the union of all with a single goal."

COB President Paulo Wanderley Teixeira was in attendance at a one-year-to-go event where the deal was announced, and used the opportunity to promote the work of his organisation.

"This evening was a great milestone for the Brazilian Olympic Committee and we were able to show our guests the work we have been doing for a long time to give our athletes the necessary structure during the Olympic Games," he said.

"The partnership and the projects presented here are proof of the credibility the COB has achieved by working on the pillars of transparency, meritocracy and austerity."
