Egypt's world number ones are through to the semi-finals at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) US Open held at Drexel University's Daskalaskis Athletic Center.

In the women's singles event, Nour El Sherbini defeated compatriot Yathreb Adel in straight games, 11-3, 11-3, 11-8 to advance at the World Tour Platinum event.

"I think I played really well," El Sherbini said.

"She has been playing really well all week, she beat Nouran [Gohar] and has been in good form.

"No-one knows how long we have been playing against each other, we are the same age and have been playing since we were five-years-old.

"She is really tough to play against and I'm really happy with my performance today.

"The game plan was to be confident and I think I did that today and played my game."

El Sherbini will play in her third US Open semi-final against France's Camille Serme, in a rematch of the 2016 final.

World number five Serme advanced after beating home favourite Amanda Sobhy in the quarter-finals.

The straight games victory ended 11-5, 11-8, 11-7.

"The crowd were cheering a lot for Amanda today," Serme said.

"I just tried to stay focused and I'm even surprised with my game today.

"I hit really good targets and I'm just really happy.

"I knew we had tough matches in the past and I won really close battles, so I knew it was going to be tough and she obviously beat the world number three, Nour El Tayeb.

"I just tried to forget about all that and focus on what I needed to do on court and it seemed to work."

In the men's singles event, Egypt's world number one Mohamed Elshorbagy also defeated a compatriot to reach the semi-finals.

Elshorbagy beat Mohamed Abouelghar in straight games 11-9, 11-9, 11-4 in 46 minutes to advance to the next round.

The two-time US Open champion is looking to add a third title to his name but he will have to overcome Paul Coll of New Zealand in the last four.

Coll beat Egypt's Tarek Momen in the quarter-finals in five games to book his place in the semi-finals.

World number eight Coll had to come from behind in the first game and take the fourth and fifth games to win.

The 96 minute match finished, 6-11, 11-8, 5-11, 11-7, 13-11.

Coll's victory secures his place in his first PSA World Platinum semi-final match.

"It feels amazing," Coll said.

"I put a lot of work in over the summer, changing my game and working on a lot of things and it's feeling really good out there."

After beating the world number four, Coll will now have to take on the world number one, Elshorbagy.

"I've been working hard on my game," Coll said.

"So I'm just excited to see where I am against the best in the world and I'm ready to give it everything I have got and really take it to him and leave it all out there."

The second half of the men's and women's quarter-final play will take place tomorrow.
