Defending women's champion Nour El Tayeb of Egypt lost to Amanda Sobhy of the United States to be eliminated from the Professional Squash Association (PSA) US Open.

Sobhy came from two games behind to defeat El Tayeb 3-2 on home soil in round three of the PSA World Tour Platinum tournament, held at Philadelphia's Drexel University.

The American has been sidelined by an Achilles injury but showed a return to form to defeat the 2017 champion, 9-11, 8-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6.

Sobhy will now take on France's Camille Serme in the quarter-final, who beat Hong Kong's Annie Au 3-0, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.

"It's a special win for me," said Sobhy.

"I was thinking about this match since the summer.

"I know how good she is and she won it last year, but I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it.

"I narrowly lost to her in five at the British [Open] and I knew that I'm right there with the top three still, but I just need to break through and I'm so pleased with how I fought back today, and having my whole support team here is huge for me and a big confidence booster."

World number one Nour El Sherbini of Egypt is also still in the competition after defeating England's Alison Waters 3-0, 11-6, 11-8, 11-8.

The world number one in the men's tournament, Egypt's Mohammed Elshorbagy, has progressed to the quarter-finals after a 3-0 victory over India's Saurav Ghosal.

"With Saurav it’s always a tough match," Elshorbagy said after his 11-5, 16-14, 11-9 victory.

"Our matches are always very tight and very difficult.

"He always knows how to move me around the court, so I knew from the first point that I had to be sharp and on my toes and I'm really happy with how I won that crucial second game.

"In the third game he made a comeback and I'm just glad that I closed it out in the end."

Elshorbagy will now play compatriot Mohamed Abouelghar after he beat fellow Egyptian Karim Abdel Gawad 3-0, 11-8, 11-9, 12-10.

The second half of the PSA US Open third round games will be played tomorrow, featuring the men's defending champion Ali Farag of Egypt against Welshman Joel Makin.
