South Africa won the men's title at the World University Rugby Sevens Championship in Swakopmund in Namibia as the women's crown went to France.
The South Africans defeated Australia in their final in their neighbouring country, 24-14.
France won the bronze medal by defeating the host nation Namibia 19-5.
In the earlier semi-finals, South Africa just about did enough to pip the French 14-12.
Australia defeated the Namibians in more comfortable fashion, 38-5.
France also beat Australia as they claimed the gold medal in the women's event.
They were in fine form and won 24-7 in the final to claim a comprehensive success.
Bronze went to Belgium who ousted South Africa 17-0.
In the last four, the French had thrashed the Belgians 56-0.
Australia beat South Africa 21-12.
The event was the first International University Sports Federation rugby sevens competition to be hosted in Africa.
