Poland won the mixed relay gold at the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Modern Pentathlon Championship in Budapest.

Marta Gobecka and Lukasz Gutkowski did just enough overall to hold off the challenge of the top Russian pairing of Kseniia Fraltsova and Nikolai Matveev in the final laser run to finish just two points clear on 1447 points,

The Russians won the laser run in a time of 11min 23.27sec, but the Poles took second place and that proved enough for victory in the first version of this event at the Ludovica University Sports Centre in Hungary’s capital city.

The bronze medal went to the Egyptian pairing of Sondos Aboubakr and Sherif Nazeir, winners of the shooting element, who amassed a total of 1488 points - 19 ahead of Ireland’s Eilidh Prise and Michael Healy.

A team event is due to bring action to a close tomorrow.

FISU launched the World University Championship (WUC) series to take place during the even-numbered years between Universiades.

As single sport competitions, the WUCs give cities - and often universities - the chance to host major international sports events with minimal cost and complexity.

There are 34 stand-alone WUC events on the 2018 calendar
