France’s Brice Loubet triumphed in the men’s competition as the International University Sports Federation (FISU) World University Modern Pentathlon Championship began in Budapest.

Loubet steadily improved his position throughout the day, having opened with a ninth place finish in the swimming event at the Ludovica University Sports Centre in Hungary’s capital city.

He followed that performance by ending seventh in the fencing competition, where he recorded 16 victories.

It was his performance in the laser run event which brought the gold medal.

Loubet recorded a time of 11min 7.08sec to top the standings in the discipline, but also clinch the overall title.

He would end on a tally of 1,163 points for the four events, with a riding competition not featuring as part of the individual events.

Egypt’s Ahmed Elgendy would push the Frenchman closely, as a laser-run time of 11:09.64 would see him end just four points behind Loubet overall.

The podium was completed by the Czech Republic’s Lukas Svechota, who accumulated 1,152 points across the day’s disciplines.

Competition will continue tomorrow with the women’s final set to take place.

The mixed relay is scheduled for Saturday (July 7) with the team event bringing action to a close on Sunday (July 8).

Horse riding will feature in both the mixed relay and team events.

FISU launched the World University Championship (WUC) series to take place during the even-numbered years between Universiades.

As single sport competitions, the WUCs give cities - and often universities - the chance to host major international sports events with minimal cost and complexity.

There are 34 stand-alone WUC events on the 2018 calendar.
