China’s Asian champion Xiaoyan Yin produced one of the most impressive qualifiers for tomorrow’s finals on the second day of the World Karate Federation’s Karate 1-Premier League event in Rabat.

The 24-year-old karateka dominated the pool in the female kumite 61 kilograms class with a tally of 11-3 in three bouts before defeating France’s talented Gwendoline Phillipe in semi-finals by senshu at the Prince Moulay Abdellah Sports Hall.

Xiaoyan Yin is due to contest gold with France’s Leila Heurtault, who beat Boutheina Hasnaoui of Tunisia 4-3.

" am very glad that I can be in another final - my goal is to be number one this year," said the Chinese karateka, who already has two golds in Karate 1-Premier League this season.

Iryna Zaretska, Azerbaijan’s Grand Winner, qualified for the final of female kumite under-68kg in her first appearance of the season, defeating Lamya Matoub of France 3-1 in the semi-finals.

Zaretska’s battle for gold will be against Denmark’s Katrine Pedersen, the World Championships runner-up who reached her second final of the year by beating Miroslava Kopúňová  of Slovakia 2-0 in the semi-finals.

Spain continued its outstanding level of performance in the kata categories as Sergio Galan defeated Hong Kong’s Chi Ming Lau for a surprise place in the male final.

The 22-year-old karateka went through by unanimous decision to his first final in senior competitions.

"I knew that this tournament could be a good opportunity for me," Galan said as he reflected on Spain taking their ninth medal in Kata competition in the 2018 Karate 1-Premier League.

2I am so glad that I could reach the final.

"I have had very difficult opponents today but I went kata by kata, trying to give my best in every bout."

He is now scheduled to meet Ali Sofuoğlu in the bout for the gold medal.

The European Championships runner-up from Turkey defeated team-mate Mehmet Yakan in the semi-final.

Germany’s world rankings leader Jonathan Horne qualified for the final of the male kumite over 84kg by defeating Turkey’s Ridvan Kaptan 2-0 in semi-finals.

Horne will now seek his second gold of the year having won in Rotterdam last month.

He is set to to meet Mehdi Filali of France, who beat Asiman Gurbanli of Azerbaijan to qualify for his first final this year.

The final of the male kumite under 84kg will be an all-Egypt confrontation as Mohamed Elkotby takes on Ahmed Elmasry.

The female kumite over 68kg final will see a Finland versus Spain confrontation.

Titta Keinanen beat Eleni Xatziliadou of Greece in semi-finals and reached the last day of competition by Hantei or "winner by decision".

Spain’s Laura Palacio took the other spot in the final after defeating Sweden’s Hana Antunovic by 2-1.

The competition is due to conclude tomorrow with all the finals.
