Australia’s Sergei Evglevski held off a tough South Korea challenge to win the men’s 25 metres rapid fire pistol event at the World University Shooting Championship in Kuala Lumpur.

Evglevski, due represent Australia at the Commonwealth Games next month in Gold Coast, impressed at the Subang International Shooting Range.

He found himself in a head-to-head battle with South Korea’s Lee Jae-kyoon at the closing stages of the final but trailed by two shots.

Evglevski hit four targets on the final round, though, to his rival’s one, which saw the Australian shooter snatch the gold.

The Belarusian-born athlete finished with 26 points to Lee’s 25, placing him on top of the podium.

South Korea’s Baek Jong-bin rounded off the medal positions having been eliminated in third place on 22 points.

Lee and Baek joined forces with Youn Jin-Won to win the team event, South Korea ending on a score of 1717-48x.

Evglevski’s Australian team took the silver medals with 1713-35x and a score of 1675-39x was enough for Russia to take the bronze.

Czech shooter Gabriela Vognarova earned her second gold medal of the Championships as she added to her 10m air rifle title by triumphing in the women’s three positions 50m event.

Vognarova finished the competition with a total of 453.5 points to win gold, with her team-mate Nikola Foistova settling with silver with 451.2.

Iran’s Najmeh Khedmati completed the podium places on 441.2 points.

Czech Republic missed out on the team title, despite boasting the top two finishers in the women’s event.

They ended the competition with a score of 1733-70x, trailing behind Poland’s Natalia Kochanska, Aneta Stankiewicz and Katarzyna Komorowska, who scored 1741-72x for the gold medal.

Cyprus' Menelaos Michaelides won the men's skeet title, after hitting 57 of the 60 targets in the competition.

He was followed by team-mate Stefanos Nikolaidis on 55 targets, while Timi Vallioniemi of Finland was eliminated on 45.

Cyprus would emerge as winners of the team event on a score of 364, with the podium rounded off by Finland and India on 358 and 348 points.

The women's individual skeet final saw Thailand's Isarapa Imprasertsuk win with 50 targets hit out of 60.

Italy's Chiara Di Marziantonio and the Czech Republic's Barbora Sumova rounded off the podium on 48 and 38 respectively.

It is the seventh edition of the International University Sport Federation event.
