Mathieu van der Poel and Sanne Cant highlighted their domination of the International Cycling Union Cyclo-cross World Cup season by winning the final event in Hoogerheide.

Both riders were already assured of their overall title prior to the event in The Netherlands.

Van der Poel impressed in front of a home crowd as he again found himself in a battle with world champion Wout Van Aert of Belgium.

The Dutchman established a 15 second advantage over Van Aert after two of the eight laps of the competition.

The gap largely remained the same throughout the remainder of the race, despite van Aert’s efforts.

Van der Poel eventually crossed the line in a winning time of 1 hour 05min 54sec, ensuring he ended the season with seven wins in nine World Cup events.

Van Aert, winner of the other two World Cups, finished as the runner-up at eight seconds down.

Belgium’s Michael Vanthourenhout rounded off the podium positions, ending 1:41 down on the winner’s time.

World champion Cant triumphed in the women’s race, earning her fifth World Cup title of the season.

The Belgian completed the course in a time of 47min 31sec  to take the victory at the end of the six lap event.

She finished 10 seconds clear of Italy’s Eva Lechner, the runner-up.

Britain’s Evie Richards was 19 seconds behind the winner in third place.

Both Van der Poel and Cant will now head into next weekend’s World Championships in Valkenburg as the clear favourites, having won the overall World Cup titles.

The Championships are scheduled to take place on Saturday and Sunday (February 3 and 4) in Limburg in The Netherlands.

Men’s and women’s under-23 races are also due to be contested at the event, along with a men’s junior race.

The women’s and men’s elite races will bring the Championships to a close.
