Hoogerheide is set to stage the concluding event of the International Cycling Union Cyclo-cross World Cup, as cyclists build towards the World Championships.

Competition in the Dutch venue will bring an end to the nine-event World Cup circuit for a season largely been dominated by two riders.

Mathieu van der Poel has proved the top riding in the men’s field, having triumphed in the opening four events.

The Dutchman missed out on victories at the fifth and sixth World Cups to Belgium’s Toon Aerts but consecutive victories in the Grand Prix Erik De Vlaeminck and last week’s Grand Prix Nommay in France have assured him of the season title.

Van der Poel is set to bid for a seventh World Cup win, looking to provide an added confidence boost heading into next weekend’s World Championships in Valkenburg, also in The Netherlands.

He earned the world title back in 2015, but was forced to settle for second place last year to Belgium’s Wout Van Aert.

Belgium’s Sanne Cant will hope to build for the defence of her world title tomorrow, as she targets further World Cup success.

Cant was only able to finish in 12th place last weekend but the result proved enough to secure the overall World Cup crown having already triumphed in four competitions.

America's Katie Compton earned her first win of the season in France and will hope to repeat the feat tomorrow.

Compton is also expected to lead the United States challenge at the World Championships.

The Championships are scheduled to take place on February 3.

Men’s and women’s under-23 races will be contested at the event, along with a men’s junior race.

The women’s and men’s elite races will bring the Championships to a close.
