Ruben Penninga and Tom van Steenis were one of three pairings from hosts The Netherlands to reach the second round of the men’s draw at the International Volleyball Federation Beach World Tour Aalsmeer Open today.

Penninga and Van Steenis came from a set down to beat compatriots Thijs Nijeboer and Pim Heurman 19-21, 21-9, 18-16 in their opening-round encounter at the Beach Indoor Center.

Next up for them are Ukraine’s Sergiy Popov and Oleksii Denin, who defeated France’s Olivier Barthelemy and Arnaud Loiseau 21-15, 19-21, 15-12.

The two other Dutch duos through to the second round are Dirk Boehlé and Steven van de Velde and Sven Vismans and Jannes van der Ham.

Boehlé and Van de Velde overcame Serbian third seeds Djordje Klasnic and Lazar Kolaric 16-21, 21-14, 15-12.

It sets up a meeting with Turkey’s Murat Giginoglu and Hasan Huseyin Mermer, who were 21-17, 21-17 victors at the expense of Germany’s Philipp Arne Bergmann and Yannick Harms.

Vismans and Van der Ham, meanwhile, upset Austrian second seeds Daniel Müllner and Florian Schnetzer 21-19, 16-21, 15-11 in the longest match of the day.

Awaiting them in the second round are the United States’ William Kolinske and Miles Evans after they defeated Norway’s Daniel Bergerud and Svein Oddmund Solhaug 21-15, 21-16.

Completing the second-round schedule is a match that pits France’s Maxime Thiercy and Arnaud Gauthier-Rat against Italy’s Enrico Rossi and Marco Caminati.

Top seeds Thiercy and Gauthier-Rat overcame England’s Chris Gregory and Issa Batrane 21-19, 21-17, while Rossi and Caminati beat Austrian wildcards Julian Hörl and Philipp Waller 19-21, 21-19, 15-11.

Action in Aalsmeer is due to continue tomorrow.

The women's quarter-finals and semi-finals are set to take place along with the men's quarter-finals.
