Tai Tzu Ting and Chou Tien Chen overcame Chinese opponents to secure gold medals in the women’s and men’s singles events to the delight of the home crowd on the final day of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Chinese Taipei Open.

Tai, seeded second in the women’s tournament, beat top seed Wang Shixian 23-21, 21-6.

Chou then followed in Tai’s footsteps to seal the men’s crown with a hard-fought 21-18, 21-17 success on home soil at the competition, part of the BWF Grand Prix Gold series.

“Wang Shixian said before the final that she hoped it would turn out to be a good match for the crowd, and that’s what happened,” said Tai.

“We’re familiar with each other’s style.

" In the first game we both played well, the lead changed hands; in the end I had better control in the drift.

“I was in the more difficult side and I realised there was no point in attacking too much, so I stopped attacking and moved her around.

“She had the difficult side in the second game and found it hard to control the shuttle.”

Despite the defeats in the singles tournaments, China still enjoyed a successful final day as they wrapped up the other three titles on offer.

Top-seeded duo Li Junhui and Liu Yuchen denied the host nation another gold medal as they ousted Chen Hung Ling and Chi-Lin Wang in a gruelling three-game battle.

The Chinese team went ahead by claiming the first game before the home pairing fought back to send the final into a decider.

Li and Liu recovered from the setback of losing the second game and eventually prevailed by virtue of a 21-17, 17-21, 24-22 triumph.

China were guaranteed a gold medal in the women’s doubles as top seeds Luo Ying and Luo Yu went up against unseeded compatriots Huang Dongping and Zhong Qianxin.

In what proved to be a surprise outcome, Huang and Zhong lifted the Chinese Taipei Open title thanks to a 21-18, 21-16 victory.

The Chinese team, so often the dominant force at international badminton events, also clinched the mixed doubles crown as Zheng Siwei and Chen Qingchen beat Tan Kian Meng and Pei Jing Lai of Malaysia 21-13 21-16.
