Xiaoting Chen led a Chinese one-two in the women’s 53 kilograms category as action continued today at the Asian Weightlifting Championships at the Uzbekistan Sport Center in Tashkent.
The world silver medallist claimed the overall title with a total of 221kg after managing unrivalled lifts of 96kg and 125kg in the snatch and clean and jerk respectively.
The silver medal went to compatriot Wanqiong Zhang with a total of 211kg, while the Philippines’ Hidilyn Diaz boosted her bid to secure a Rio 2016 berth by taking bronze with 208kg.
Zhang was the silver medallist in the snatch with 95kg, bettering third-placed Diaz’s 90kg.
She had to settle for bronze in the clean and jerk with her 116kg falling short of Diaz’s 118kg.
The men’s 62kg event saw Japan’s Yoichi Itokazu triumph in the snatch with 130kg and come second in the clean and jerk with 158kg for a winning total of 288kg.
Vietnam’s Van Vinh Trinh won the clean and jerk on a body weight tiebreaker, but had to settle for second place overall with 282kg.
Iraq’s Mohammed Ridha Ali Ali rounded out the overall podium with 277kg after finishing second in the snatch with 125kg - beating home favourite Adkhamjon Ergashev on a body weight tiebreaker - and third in the clean and jerk with 152kg.
Action in Tashkent is set to continue tomorrow.
